Siberian Platform
Growth in the Asian
economies makes hydrocarbon accumulations in Siberia
increasingly attractive. The Siberian Platform consists of
Proterozoic and Phanerozoic strata that overlie the Archaean
basement of the Siberian Craton. Although oil and gas are
produced from these strata locally, vast areas are exploration
frontiers. The unusual nature of the petroleum systems are also
a challenge. Some source rocks are as old as the Precambrian,
with protracted histories of generation and migration into
subtle traps. These traps have been affected by polyphase
deformation, but in such gentle increments that the nature and
effects are not clearly understood.
