Around half of the
Arctic is Russian territory: the western part of the Russian
Arctic is characterised by world-class hydrocarbon provinces
(West Siberia, Timan-Pechora) and adjacent offshore areas with
huge future potential (Barents Sea, Kara Sea); in contrast, the
eastern part of the Russian Arctic is virtually unexplored, yet
contains some of the most extensive continental shelves of any
ocean margin
