The Russian part of the Barents Shelf has huge potential as a future hydrocarbon province. Palaeozoic plays equivalent to those in the Timan-Pechora province characterise the southern part of the Barents Shelf. To the north, substantial finds have been made in Mesozoic reservoirs on structural highs. These include one of the world’s largest gas fields Shtokmanovskoye, which remains to be developed. Many areas of the Eastern Barents Shelf are still poorly explored.
